Juno reactions

Juno epitomizes all that is good about indie comedies. It’s funny without being contrived; sweet but not cloying; precious but not twee. The story of an acerbic 16-year-old who gets knocked up by her unassuming nice-guy best friend, it deftly balances comedy and drama in a way that makes most comedies and dramas seem utterly clunky.
Ellen Page, in a star-making performance, perfectly captures the not a girl, not yet a woman uncertainty of female adolescence, imbuing her character with maturity beyond her years but also heart-wrenching vulnerability. Michael Cera delivers on the promise exhibited in Arrested Development; we know he’s hilarious from that and Superbad, but here his lanky awkwardness and mumbling befuddlement show a depth heretofore unseen.
With a stellar supporting cast including Jason Batemen, Jennifer Garner, Allison Janney and J.K. Simmons, it’s hard to find fault. Juno is easily one of the most charming, winning comedies of the year. It’s so enjoyable that I have nothing bad to say, rendering this review incredibly banal. As the heroine of the movie would say, it’s totally boss. ![]()
