My supposed megaton crush on Christian Bale notwithstanding, I’m finding myself a little ambivalent about 3:10 to Yuma. It’s a remake of the best Western I had never heard of until today, and it costars the increasingly unenjoyable Russell Crowe. I guess there’s like this train? And someone’s gotta get to it? And some other dudes want to stop them?

Trailer editing aside, 3:10 looks similar to all the other post-Unforgiven Westerns, which isn’t a bad thing. There’ll be a lot of from-horseback gunplay, the hero and the villain will both be immersed in a rich sauce of charisma, and some snively law-enforcement bureaucrat will get in over his head. And I’m sure we’ll all learn about self-determination or something equally frontiersy.
