Demo Derby: Split/Second

Split/Second asks the age-old question: Do I take out these cars with small exploding barrels dropped from helicopters or save up for a power play to bring a giant jetliner crashing down on them? Always the jetliner, people. Always the jetliner.

That’s the fun to be had in Split/Second, from the team who delivered the under-appreciated ATV racing game Pure. Rather than shooting cars directly like in May’s other arcade racer Blur, you use the extremely hazardous environment to take out foes and race to victory.

The Split/Second demo is a bit anemic (especially compared to Blur’s meaty multiplayer beta), with only single-player racing on one track, but what a track it is. The ability to open alternate routes greatly alters the giant tracks and makes for some interesting (wait for it) split-second decisions. The only tough decision is, do you buy this game or Blur? Buy both games, people. Always both.

How does it feel? The first time I played it at PAX East, the control felt really heavy, like the stick wouldn’t do anything until I’d hold it in one direction for a second or two. It felt lighter the next time, but I’m not sure if that was a less-busted controller or me getting used to the feel of the game.

It felt pretty responsive, very much like Burnout.
